Monetise the Meta

Give it away, give it away, give it away now
– Red Hot Chili Peppers

Musicians for the most part have accepted the fact that they’re most probably not going to make their money by selling millions of albums.

With the onslaught of iTunes, Spotify & Pandora – the money isn’t made from the sale of songs, but from the tours, memorabilia & limited edition (ie. expensive) fan-only releases.

The money is now made from the Meta – content that isn’t the art itself but is ‘about’ the art.

The songs, then become the vehicle for the artist to be spread, shared and talked about – and become the funnel for selling the Meta.

If your art is awash in a sea of ‘free’, then charging for your art is a roadblock to being shared.

If it turns out you can’t charge for your actual art online, unite 1,000 true fans and you will find there’s a way to monetise the Meta.
